Okeana, Ohio, named in honor of a local Native American princess, the daughter of Chief Kiatta, is brimming with history. The Rev. Benjamin Lloyd, a native of Wales, plotted the village on land that he owned. There has been an operating post office in the village since 1829 under the names Tariff and Okeana.
You'll fall in love with the scenery and rich historical past of Okeana, Ohio at the Governor Bebb Pioneer Village. This 264-acre preserve is a collection of historic log cabins and houses that have moved from other locations in the area. These reconstructed cabins represent a typical early Midwestern settlement. The centerpiece of the Pioneer Village is the log house birthplace of William Bebb, the 19th Governor of Ohio.
Shandon, the foundation for the first Welsh settlement in Ohio, was laid on June 29, 1801 when William and Morgan Gwilym purchased the land in Section 25. The first post office began operation in 1831. The village, originally known as New London, has also been called Vaughan's Crossings, Paddy's Run and Glendower.
While in Shandon, visit Paddy's Run Old Welsh Cemetery. Established in 1821, this beautiful burial ground was in use for 70 years and is the final resting place for many veterans from the Napoleonic Wars, Mexican War and Civil War.
