Named for the family who gave it to the Lane Public Libraries, the Smith History Library collects, preserves, and disseminates information on the history of southwestern Ohio. Special collections include maps, photos, newspapers, letters, diaries, and books chronicling the history of families, schools, churches, businesses, cemeteries, and more.

In 2013, the Smith Library was accepted into the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Sponsored by the National Park Service, the Network to Freedom coordinates preservation and education efforts and integrates local historical places, museums, and interpretive programs associated with the Underground Railroad into a mosaic of community, regional, and national stories.
